Purpose
Supervision helps psychologists develop their skills and ensures they practice ethically and competently. Supervisors provide feedback and support and help ensure that psychologists practice within accepted professional standards.
Who's involved
The Psychology Board of Australia (APA) requires that all training programs leading to registration are supervised by Board-approved supervisors. These are experienced psychologists who have undergone Board-approved training.
What to expect
Supervisors should help supervisees develop a learning plan and monitor their competency development. Supervisees should have clear discussions with their supervisor about expectations, how they'll work together, and what they'd like to get out of the placement.
Oversight and Guidance
They provide direct supervision and mentorship, helping supervisees develop clinical skills and ethical decision-making.
Evaluation
Supervisors assess the supervisee’s progress, provide feedback, and ensure that they are meeting the competencies outlined by their licensing board.
Compliance
They ensure that the training and practices adhere to legal and ethical guidelines set by regulatory bodies.
Personal and professional development
Reflecting on the supervisee's own professional growth, emotional responses, and areas of difficulty.
Skill Development
Supervision helps interns and early-career psychologists enhance their therapeutic techniques and professional skills.
Support
It provides emotional and professional support, helping supervisees cope with the challenges of clinical work.
How much supervision do I need
Psychology registration is regulated by the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA), which is part of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). The duration and frequency of supervision sessions vary depending on the supervisee’s evolving learning needs and their professional pathway.
